TWENTIETH CENTURY CLUB HISTORY ...

TWENTIETH CENTURY CLUB HISTORY ... The Twentieth Century Club was founded in 1931 by a group of Waynesburg mothers to develop the educational, civic, and social interests of its members, to advance the welfare of the community and to promote the programs and work of women. Our motto is "Service is the greatest of all arts."Throughout the organization's 76 year history, we have been instrumental in developing and supporting community projects that are of benefit to all, especially our children. The club, under the leadership of our first President, Mrs. Emily Baily, was responsible for starting the first kindergarten class in Waynesburg. During World War II, our projects included support of a Blood Plasma Bank and the purchasing of War Bonds. Greene County Memorial Hospital (now the Southeast Regional Medical Center) has always been a benefactor of the club's contributions from the purchasing of an oxygen tent in 1938, to our support of the Pediatric Unit. In 1946, the Twentieth Century Club became an active supporter of the Waynesburg Central Playground by paying for instructors for the summer program. We have continued to support the playground programs each year by donating 60% of all funds raised. Throughout the years, our support has also been given to the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, Bowlby Library, Special Olympics, Children and Youth Services, the Community Park Pavilion, Bicentennial projects, anti-drug and alcohol programs, Toys for Tots, and Juvenile Diabetes.Funds for these projects have been raised by various means including bake sales, raffles, auctions, house tours, fashion shows and more recently, through our annual salad luncheon held each spring. In the future, we will continue to have as our goal the helping of causes like those we have supported in the past, keeping our children and their welfare foremost in our services.
